Moving Forward

Dear praying friends,

I felt led to write a brief update on where the work is on Herrnhut, the place of rest that the Lord has called us to build here in Wisconsin. 

We have removed the old barnboard that was on half of the outbuilding, stripped the building down to the old beams, and added plywood to front, back, and sides, as well as framing in windows. My husband, brother-in-law, and nephew have been working on these things throughout the summer in their spare time. My nephew was also able to frame in and install three windows on the part of the Missionary House where the barn board had previously been removed. 

The next step after this was/is to dig around the compromised foundation under about 2/3 of the outbuilding (it is currently on stone columns that are pretty old and need reinforcing). Last week, someone came to dig around the columns, and we are now waiting for the concrete to be poured this week, the Lord willing. 

After this step, my nephew will be able to install the rest of the windows into the remaining portion of the Missionary House, as well as install the front and back door. Things are beginning to shape up, and we are grateful to the Lord! 

Our hope is to be able to housewrap and apply siding to the Missionary House before the really cold weather comes, sometimes quickly here in Wisconsin. We are trusting in the Lord's timing and moving forward step by step. 

To keep in prayer:

• That concrete would be poured this week so that the project could move forward in a timely fashion.

• That the Lord would continue to bless us with good weather while my nephew, husband, and brother-in-law work on the Missionary House.

• For a part time worker for our property; I continue to pray that the Lord would bring someone to help me with the upkeep of the property as I need help with some of the heavier work. 

Praise:

• That the septic system supporting our home and the Missionary House was finally installed after a very long wait and that the water line was brought to the Missionary House during this process. 

• That the Lord has provided family members with skill and willingness to do much of the work on the Missionary House; I am so grateful for this. 

Please continue to keep this project in your prayers! I am greatly encouraged by the way in which the Lord has removed so many roadblocks along the way and parted waters that seemed irremoveable. I give all of the praise and glory to Him. The Lord will build His house. 

And as always, I am so grateful for your prayers.

A Holy Passion Book Release~~A Novel of Missionary David Brainerd and Jerusha Edwards

A Holy Passion is here! :-) For years, my sister talked about writing and researching a novel based on the lives of the missionary David Brainerd and of his relationship with Jonathan Edward's daughter, Jerusha. She began work on it a few years ago and it culminated on the 300th birthday of Brainerd--Truly, this precious, beautiful novel is the result of years of careful research and preparation. My sister, author Alicia G. Ruggieri  has put her heart and soul into this work and the result has been this beautiful re-telling of the stories of missionary David Brainerd and of famed theologian Jonathan Edward's daughter, Jerusha--from David's time at Yale, to his missionary endeavors, to the years of his declining health, and finally of his death in the Edward's home and of the love that he and Jerusha shared both for one another and for their Lord. 

Alicia's research is exquisite; I love her careful attention to the details of that particular time period, from how a colonial home was run to the manner of speech and dress and the customs of those days. Her focus on every little detail is apparent, and it just makes the book historically delightful. 

Her artistry in capturing the romantic relationship between David and Jerusha is both revitalizing and heart rending. This book weaves such a tale of bittersweet love that it leaves the reader inwardly hushed and affected. 

There were several times in reading her novel that I just sat with the book before me and knew the Holy Spirit whispering some deep lesson of surrender to my heart through the example of David Brainerd. Alicia's depiction of his character and devotion to the Lord Jesus in every area of his life challenged me and comforted me at the same time. I realized afresh that the God of David Brainerd is the same God of this time and that great and mighty things can be done through His people when they are fully surrendered to Him in mind, body, and heart. 

I loved her depiction of the character and historical figure of Jerusha, Jonathan Edward's daughter. Her strong, sweet character that yearns after the Savior challenged me; her inward struggles proved that she was human, and yet finally rested in the Lord with her life and with the life of the man she loved. 

The portrayal of missionary David Brainerd and his utter devotion toward our Savior riveted me. His life is a challenge to every one of us as believers in asking the question that Alicia asks on the back cover of her book, "What would you give up for Christ?" David gave everything. 

This book is one that every believer seeking a deeper, richer relationship with Jesus Christ would benefit from; it challenged me and encouraged me in my devotion to the Lord while at the same time engaged me with its intricate suspenseful story-line and of the romance between David and Jerusha that is woven into the book's rich tapestry.

~A Lilias Trotter Giveaway~

One of the most precious gifts that my Mom gave to me growing up was a love and a nurturing of my love for missionary and Christian biographies. Next to the Word of God, the Lord has used His stories of men and women who gave up their "earthly all" to take up their cross and to follow Him in a tremendous way in my life. Filling my mind with accounts of the lives of Oswald Chambers, John Paton, Amy Carmichael, Adoniram Judson, James Fraser, William Tyndale, and many others has fostered in me a yearning to imitate these men and women in a very small way. I am so grateful for the gift of their lives and testimonies! I (truthfully) could never "get into" theological tomes--although I tried to read them! But missionary stories and stories of Christians who walked closely with the Lord--I ate them up and the Lord gave me an insatiable hunger to read about His servants. I'm thankful for this because it taught me by example that one really could follow the Lord wholeheartedly--that through the power of the Holy Spirit, this kind of life of surrender is possible. No one does it perfectly--but each one has the capacity through His power working in and through us to pursue an obedient, surrendered life and to make the most of the time that is given to us. Praise God that He does the work through us as we surrender to Him . . . nothing is impossible for Him. 

Many of you know about my love for the missionary Lilias Trotter and her writings and art. I have wanted to run this giveaway for a while now, in the hopes that it might introduce more of you to this wonderful servant of our Lord and Savior! My prayer is that more people will read her writings and in turn, recommend them to others; may the Lord be glorified through her precious example of faith and obedience.

Lilias Trotter~A Life Lived for the Father's Glory and Documentary Thoughts

Many of you who know me know how deeply I have been touched by the life of Lilias Trotter. Her story has spoken to me in ways that few stories have and her influence will be etched in my heart forever. I am indebted to Elisabeth Elliot and Miriam Huffman Rockness and especially to our Lord and Savior for introducing me to her writings and bringing her story across my path. There are people that the Lord uses in each person's life to influence them and to challenge them--Lilias's story has strongly been used of the Lord in mine.

Lilias's life was one that showed forth the sufficiency of Jesus Christ--and also illuminated the joy for me, of surrender. I understood through her life and example, both as a missionary to the Muslims in Algeria as well as her daily walk with the Lord, that the only life really worth living is the life lived out in surrender to the Father's will for one's life. Surrender is the pathway to joy. It may be a very painful, difficult road, but the only way to life and true, lasting peace. 

I thank God for her writings, her example of obedience, and her great love for her "Father's world," and for her Great Father through her art and writings.

I was finally able to watch the recently-released documentary, Many Beautiful Things, about Lilias Trotter's life--and I happily and wholeheartedly recommend it. I liked Many Beautiful Things because I think that it whets one's appetite to read more about Lilias Trotter as well as read her writings. It is definitely by far not a complete glimpse into her life, but provides enough detail to be satisfying, edifying, and encouraging. A lot of the focus in the documentary is given to her struggle to release Art as her main passion--to me, it is more of an artistic interpretation of her life rather than a heavily-detailed fact by fact analysis. Which is why I would encourage people to watch the documentary as well as read the book, A Passion for the Impossible, by Miriam Huffman Rockness for a more in-depth account of Lilias's life. Both are tremendously spiritually encouraging and uplifting. I also loved the little coffee table book, A Blossom in the Desert: Reflections of Faith in the Art and Writings of Lilias Trotter. It is a beautifully illustrated book containing her artwork and quotations.

And as a side note, I would also encourage this beautifully-illustrated and written children's book about Lilias Trotter--my little daughter loves it! This short book depicts Lilias's life for young children and gives them a curiosity about who she was and how she served the Lord in the slums of London as well as in North Africa. It is definitely worth adding to your library. 

If you have never read the writings of Lilias Trotter, they are the best way to get to 'know" her on a deeper, more profound level. Her Parables of the Cross is a beautiful, rich book about walking closely with the Savior through surrender. 


I hope that learning about this beautiful servant of God will encourage you toward a closer walk with our Lord and Savior; I know that her life has touched mine deeply.

I love the story about Eric Liddell. Liddell's quiet determination, bold confidence, and dedication to his God speak a profound message to our hearts. Eric Liddell, by the grace and power of God, ran his race well. His life, his story, is an example to us.  

The film, Chariots of Fire, focuses mainly upon the literal race that Eric won, and the race which he chose not to run because of his conviction not to participate in sporting events on Sundays.

Curious to learn more about Eric Liddell, I read the biography detailing his life written by David McCasland. Later, I watched a documentary based upon that movie, which really gave a glimpse into the whole scope of Eric's life, not only the single race that he is famous for. 

Liddell came from a missionary family and very soon after his brief Olympic career, he went to China as a missionary himself, dying in his early 40s from a brain aneurysm in a Japanese internment camp during WWII. He chose to remain in China even though the opportunity had been offered to him to leave. Liddell's heart was bound up and buried in the cause that the Lord had planted there--and the love of the Lord constrained him. He died in China. 

Eric Liddell's life has whispered to me a lesson, among others, but a quiet lesson that has spoken to me softly and been impressed upon my heart over the past years, and it is this:

There are times that we run, when the gifts and abilities that God has given us put us in the "spotlight." These are the times that we choose whether the glory through the gifts that He has given us will be for us or for our Savior. We make our decision before the world's watching eyes. Eric Liddell chose to honor his Heavenly Father, and in turn, the Father richly rewarded the Scottish athlete.

And then . . .  there are times when we take off our "running shoes" and become lost in a foreign land--where no one knows us, where our lives become buried in His service; we are planted in the darkness.

What is Liddell mainly known for? His brief Olympic career. The decision that sparked controversy and debate and admiration and thought. But not much is known about what happened to him afterward.

Liddell's love and devotion for Jesus Christ brought him onto the Olympic field of victory and gave him the spiritual victory of refusing to compromise his conscience for the sake of earthly gold. 

It also brought him onto the mission field. There his life was "used up" in a very different way than it had been before. We admire Eric Liddell for his courage and conviction on the Olympic field. I believe that it was that same courage and conviction that drove Liddell into China. 

And there he was "buried." And there he was used quietly for the Lord's purposes--without any physical pomp or wreaths of victory or gold medals. Only spiritual ones. No one sang his praises. No one really noticed him as much. 

How many of us are in a hidden place right now, buried? We have laid aside our gifts and talents for a season or are using them "non-visibly;" in some simple way we serve. 

Sometimes we feel starved. We want to do something "significant," "important." We do not realize that perhaps we ARE doing the most significant thing . . . 

And the Lord has buried us, spoken to us, urged us through His Spirit to lay aside our cherished gifts for awhile to be used in His service in some very quiet, unnoticed way. 

So that when we do emerge from the darkness, like a seed into the spring-light--others will not see us, but Him--as the light of the great Sun is what makes the plant reflecting it a thing of beauty. 

Our gifts are to reflect His pleasure. Our seasons of stillness and quietness, of "buried-ness" are to absorb His pleasure--to grow intimately closer to Him--as Paul did in the years before his ministry. 

There are seasons in our lives of glory and seasons when the Lord speaks and says step back, wait, grow, be used in the quiet places. 

A season of Olympic glory for Eric Liddell, then a season of quiet buried-ness in China. Both seasons greatly used by the Lord, both glorifying to Him. 

And sometimes we think that we need to use all of our gifts all the time . . . but there are seasons, just as the earth bows its head in winter, quietly, humbly and submits to death . . . for the purpose of being resurrected in the spring. And all to reflect the Great Father's glory. 

Oswald Chambers says, 

The great enemy of the life of faith in God is not sin, but the good which is not good enough. The good is always the enemy of the best.

Because whatever God's will is for us in the now, in our present season is His best. 

We lay aside our glory. 

Jesus laid aside His glory . . . the glory rightfully His, the glory of heaven. To become a Man. To humble himself for a season. To be buried. 

Life poured from that buried Seed, resurrected, eternal, joy-filling life.

Our buried seasons will also bring forth life--

They are not wasted.

This month's giveaway is for a copy of Ravi Zacharias' Walking From East to West: God in the Shadows. 

I cannot speak more highly of Zacharias' books. The Lord's work is so evident through his words and through his humble Spirit-filled ministry that when I listen to him or read his words, I have to admit, I stand in quiet awe of the Holy Spirit working in and through this man. 

I read this particular book several years ago. It gives the reader an eye-opening glimpse into Zacharias' early life and conversion, and the Lord's subsequent use of Zacharias as a willing vessel for the spread of the Gospel.
