Each Perfect Gift~~Book Review

What do you do when the sins of your past rise from the dead?

Ben Picoletti’s conversion astounded the little town of Chetham, Rhode Island – and no one more than the pastor’s daughter, whose heart Ben seeks to win… despite his shameful history. After all, the cross of Christ has removed Ben’s sins as far as the east is from the west, hasn’t it?

Yet, as Christmas 1937 draws near, Ben’s past returns to trouble him – and to force Ben to grapple with the practical meaning of forgiveness and grace in his own life… and in the lives of those around him.

A story for anyone who has ever been haunted by the consequences of choices they once made, Each Perfect Gift brings a message of the true redemption that is found in Christ alone.

Each Perfect Gift is the first story in the series A LEGACY OF GRACE, an off-shoot of the original A TIME OF GRACE series, featuring beloved Grace Picoletti and Paulie Giorgi. If you crave emotional, old-fashioned stories with strong spiritual heart, a reaffirmation of God's continual work in everyday people's lives and hearts, and memorable characters whose redemption is deep and realistic, you've come to the right place!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From my sister's desk comes another beautiful, deeply moving novel just in time for the Christmas season. If you have read her A Time of Grace Series, you will recognize the characters from those books as their story continues to unfold in Each Perfect Gift. For those of you who have grown to love Paulie, Grace, Sarah, Dr. Giorgi, and Ben, this book perfectly draws Ben's story to a painfully swelling and then beautifully satisfying close while including those other characters that we have all come to love from Alicia's previous books as she offers us glimpses into each of their journeys.
I think that I love Alicia's books not just because they are so very well-written and researched, but because she writes with conviction and with compassion; I don't think that I have read one of her books without crying at some point or without relating to at least one of the characters in her books on a deeper level. She writes with conviction in the sense that her books are deeply scriptural and based on scriptural principles without being "preachy." She writes with compassion in the sense that there is always mercy for the sinner in her stories as well as mercy and compassion for those who are often the "outcasts" of Christian "society."
As usual in Alicia's books, a beautiful thread of redemption runs through--and Each Perfect Gift is no exception~both for the newly-born saint (Ben) and for the sinner (Annie)~~ a thread of redemption that glistens red like Rahab's rope hanging from a window in Jericho.
The book follows their stories (Ben's and Annie's), giving exquisite attention to detail and drawing the reader's mind and heart back~~again and again~~ to the hope that is found in Jesus Christ despite the mistakes that have been made in the past or the sins that have been committed.
There is always a way . . . perhaps not a way "out" in the sense of running away from the consequences of sin or from past mistakes, but a way of redemption~~
This book is laced with the truth that God takes even our sinful choices or the choices that we have made in ignorance and works good in and through them when we come to Him in a spirit of humility and repentance and with submission to His perfect plan for our lives in and through our mistakes (not despite them).
The Lord is able to redeem, restore, rebuild . . . and this is seen in the lives of both Ben and Annie.
Things that I loved about this book~~
~Ben's struggle to do what is right and his willingness to face the consequences of his past sins rather than running away from them.
~Annie's "hardness" at the beginning of the book that turns to softness near the end at the time of her conversion.
~The characterization of Betty, the Pastor's daughter; I really enjoyed her "inner dialogue" and the glimpses into her mind and heart throughout the book-- I loved the way that the softening of her heart somewhat reversely mirrored that of Annie's softening.
~The very clear, scriptural salvation message and that message's implications for a believer's everyday choices expressed throughout the decisions that Alicia's characters make throughout the book.
~The historical accuracy and careful attention to detail.
~The ending of the story and the way in which Alicia beautifully ties all of the details together in her book.
I won't give away too much of the story, but I would encourage you to read Each Perfect Gift . . . even if you haven't read the A Time of Grace series, Each Perfect Gift may be read as a stand-alone.
So go on! Pick up a copy and make your self a great big mug of steaming hot chocolate and read this beautiful book . . . it will deeply bless your heart.
It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas! Plus a GIVEAWAY!
*Please read to the end for a GIVEAWAY!!! 😊
To welcome in the Christmas season, I thought that I would share a fun post about some stores that I love to shop from for people on my Christmas shopping list. :-)
For those of us who don't have a huge budget and are not able to normally support small businesses even if we would like to, Christmas is a great excuse opportunity. 😊.
And I would add a Scriptural principle into the mix here--as believers, we are to do good to all people, but especially to those of the household of faith. Therefore, I often try to support small businesses/shops run by Christians when I am purchasing gifts. I believe that this is just one way that we can show love and kindness towards our sisters and brothers in Christ through supporting them in their business endeavors--and they usually make/create beautiful things! :-)
So, without further ado, I'll share some of the shops that I love below. These individuals create lovely products that make great Christmas gifts--they are also very easy to contact/get in touch with and are quick to answer any questions that you may have. Use the highlighted links below to check out their shops; maybe you'll find something for someone on your list that they will love from one or all of these shops! 🎄
Elizabeth creates lovely and unique jewelry that makes wonderful Christmas gifts! Her work is careful and meticulous and she is a joy to order from! I ordered a pair of earrings for my niece from Elizabeth for Christmas (shhh ;-)). They were delicate and incredibly well-made and carefully packaged. Elizabeth continually posts new pieces on Facebook; there is so much to choose from! You can find Figure Eight Jewelry on Facebook
I have to admit that I am a bit partial toward this shop as Alicia is my dear sister, but even if she was not, I would highly recommend her works of fiction. Alicia writes beautiful Christian fiction; her stories are redemptive, heartwarming, and incredibly well-written. She is a disciplined writer who pours herself into her work and into every aspect of her books. Alicia recently opened a shop on her author website where her books may be purchased directly from her.  Her books are priced extremely reasonably and make perfect Christmas gifts, especially for those who enjoy Christian fiction with substance that is well-written. She is even running a sale right now! You may visit her store HERE--and she is offering autographed copies of her books as well when you purchase them directly from her.
This is a very sweet Etsy shop that is filled with all kinds of delightful handmade soaps, gift baskets, and other wonderful gifts. All of the items are prepared with great love and care and there is almost certainly something for everyone in this shop! I've enjoyed getting to know Ang a little better through blogging and I really enjoy many of the products that she offers in her sweet shop! There are so may wonderful listings right now!
The Enchanting Rose
Stephanie is a friend who makes exquisite handmade gifts. I love her shop because she offers free shipping in the continental United States, which is a huge incentive for me, along with the fact that her creations are lovely, very feminine, and highly "gift-able." If you have a someone on your list who loves pretty, useful, unique gifts, this shop is for you! Stephanie also ships extremely quickly and often includes "extras" in her boxes. You may shop directly through Stephanie's store on her blog
And there you have it! Four wonderful shops to visit this Christmas season! And you may do it all from the comfort of your cozy couch! I hope that you will find something for someone on your list! Go ahead! Be a blessing to someone from the household of faith! 🎄
And now for the fun part! A Holy Passion~A Novel of David Brainerd and Jerusha Edwards Giveaway!
Recently, my sister published her novel detailing the lives of missionary David Brainerd and of Jerusha Edward's, theologian Jonathan Edward's daughter. Jerusha cared for Brainerd in the Edward's home near the end of his life and it is believed that they shared a romantic attachment. Alicia delves into the lives of both of these historical figures in her book; you can read my post about it HERE
This week, I am giving away two copies of this precious, beautiful book. I believe that it will draw your heart closer to Christ and I pray that it will be a blessing to those who read it. You may use the Rafflecopter form at the bottom of this post to enter the giveaway and the two winners will be announced next week.  Entrants must live in the continental United States for shipping reasons! :-)
Description from the back of the book:
“My heart begins its slow crescendo at the news. Mr. Brainerd – my Mr. Brainerd – has come at last.”
After a few scant years of solitary missionary work among the American Indians on the colonial frontier, David Brainerd has been forced off the field once more by his terminal illness. A man who has sacrificed every earthly comfort for the sake of Christ, he takes refuge in the home of Reverend Jonathan Edwards, eminent Great Awakening theologian and pastor… and the father of a young woman named Jerusha.
Unbeknownst to David, Jerusha Edwards has nurtured an affection for him since she met him long ago. Their renewed acquaintanceship challenges Jerusha to understand the meaning of selfless, Calvary love. Yet does such love demand too great a sacrifice for her to make?
Told with an emphasis on the known facts of Jerusha and David’s relationship as well as his missionary undertakings, this novel carefully embellishes the historical record, weaving a bittersweet tale of romantic, holy devotion.
A Holy Passion Book Release~~A Novel of Missionary David Brainerd and Jerusha Edwards
A Holy Passion is here! :-) For years, my sister talked about writing and researching a novel based on the lives of the missionary David Brainerd and of his relationship with Jonathan Edward's daughter, Jerusha. She began work on it a few years ago and it culminated on the 300th birthday of Brainerd--Truly, this precious, beautiful novel is the result of years of careful research and preparation. My sister, author Alicia G. Ruggieri  has put her heart and soul into this work and the result has been this beautiful re-telling of the stories of missionary David Brainerd and of famed theologian Jonathan Edward's daughter, Jerusha--from David's time at Yale, to his missionary endeavors, to the years of his declining health, and finally of his death in the Edward's home and of the love that he and Jerusha shared both for one another and for their Lord.
Alicia's research is exquisite; I love her careful attention to the details of that particular time period, from how a colonial home was run to the manner of speech and dress and the customs of those days. Her focus on every little detail is apparent, and it just makes the book historically delightful.
Her artistry in capturing the romantic relationship between David and Jerusha is both revitalizing and heart rending. This book weaves such a tale of bittersweet love that it leaves the reader inwardly hushed and affected.
There were several times in reading her novel that I just sat with the book before me and knew the Holy Spirit whispering some deep lesson of surrender to my heart through the example of David Brainerd. Alicia's depiction of his character and devotion to the Lord Jesus in every area of his life challenged me and comforted me at the same time. I realized afresh that the God of David Brainerd is the same God of this time and that great and mighty things can be done through His people when they are fully surrendered to Him in mind, body, and heart.
I loved her depiction of the character and historical figure of Jerusha, Jonathan Edward's daughter. Her strong, sweet character that yearns after the Savior challenged me; her inward struggles proved that she was human, and yet finally rested in the Lord with her life and with the life of the man she loved.
The portrayal of missionary David Brainerd and his utter devotion toward our Savior riveted me. His life is a challenge to every one of us as believers in asking the question that Alicia asks on the back cover of her book, "What would you give up for Christ?" David gave everything.
This book is one that every believer seeking a deeper, richer relationship with Jesus Christ would benefit from; it challenged me and encouraged me in my devotion to the Lord while at the same time engaged me with its intricate suspenseful story-line and of the romance between David and Jerusha that is woven into the book's rich tapestry.
A Holy Passion is available on Amazon on Kindle as well as in paperback. The links are provided below after the description of Alicia's novel to her website and where you may find Alicia on social media to learn more about her and her work.
