What I'm Watching This February Instead of Fifty Shades Freed 💏

With the enormous popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey films, I thought that I would recommend an alternative that Christians can watch this Valentine's season. I've watched this film numerous times; I love it so dearly. And it speaks depth and grace to the heart. The film? :-) ~~

Oh, how I love this film! It is beautiful, poignant, romantic without being overly sappy, deeply engaging and fun to watch. Old Fashioned is refreshing and real and sweet. And it is a film that touches the soul rather than just the emotions, which I believe is so important.

Instead of drowning our souls in the filth that Hollywood tries to feed us, why not watch things that edify and encourage us in our faith~to walk closer to the Lord Jesus Christ in our relationships and to honor His name in all that we do?

So don't slink into a dark cinema this February and pour pollution into your mind and heart~~ curl up on the couch with a cozy bowl of popcorn and some Reeses peanut butter cups (haha--my preference :-)), give your husband or wife a tender kiss, and feed your eternal soul with something good.

Description of the film:

Clay Walsh is a "former frat boy" (from the back cover of the film) who has turned to Christ and forsaken his formerly-sinful lifestyle. He lives in a small midwestern town in the state of Ohio where he works in an antique shop restoring "old-fashioned" odds and ends. He holds high ideals for a flawless courtship, one in which he has pledged not to be alone in a room with a woman who is not his wife. As the film unfolds, the viewer learns that Clay still struggles with severe guilt over his past sins and is trying in his own strength to keep his high standards. Later, he embraces the grace of Christ over his past regrets and a beautiful transformation occurs in Clay's life.

The main female character, Amber, is a fun-loving unbeliever who goes wherever the wind takes her, who has been hurt in past relationships, and who providentially ends up in Ohio, renting the small apartment above the building where Clay restores furniture.  She is mystified by Clay's gentlemanly behavior, sincerity, and high ideals, although she thinks him a "little odd."

Clay and Amber slowly and sweetly, though sometimes painfully, fall in love with one another. Clay ultimately sheds his legalistic mindset toward romantic love while at the same time still maintaining his high standards and respect towards women. Amber, in my understanding, embraces Christ as her Savior toward the end of the film, realizing that "all things have been made new," (referencing her past sinful life of mistakes and broken relationships), and Clay and Amber become engaged in a very tender love scene (enter box of tissues and replay button ;-)).

Books I Love: Lucky Ducklings

This is one of my new favorite children's books. I found it at the library and love it so much that I will probably purchase it to add to my own collection of children's books. Reminiscent of Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings, this sweet, sweet book tells the true story of a Mama duck and her little ones and their hazardous journey across a grate covering part of the street in a city in New York.

The Mama makes it across the grate but the ducklings, being too tiny, fall in one by one. Thankfully, someone observes what happens and they are systematically rescued from the drain and restored to their Mama.

The illustrations in Lucky Ducklings are vivid, simple, and bright.  The story line is easy for young children to follow. I would say that it is a good story to read to a child anywhere from 2 and up. My kids loved it (they are 3 and 5 right now). I love the way that this story teaches children compassion for the Lord's creation and represents the ducks as sweet and innocent rather than sarcastic and crude (as many children's books unfortunately represent animals these days).

I am always so excited when I find a good book at the library; it seems harder and harder to find good, solid, edifying books for children. But this was one!

The only "issue" I had with the book is its title--I just explain to my children that as Christians, we don't believe in luck, rather, that the Lord's hand works in all things. I remember my Mom always telling me that when I was little and now I find myself echoing her words! :-)

At any rate, I strongly recommend this book for your personal library; you and your kids will enjoy it immensely! :-)

I love Sarah's writing. Hers is one of the blogs that I return to over and over and find encouragement, wisdom, and gentle admonition toward being a more Christ-focused Mom. And so I was delighted when I learned that Sarah had written a book speaking to the hearts and minds of mothers. And Sarah's heart speaks through this book. She is deeply committed as a mother of her two children but most importantly to honoring the Lord and setting him forth as the Treasure that is worth surrendering lesser things for.  This book expresses the joy of surrender--in our mothering and in pursuing His high calling upon our hearts and lives. I'll share one quote that I especially loved (among many) from the book.  Sarah says, "It is not that motherhood is a better job than say, being a teacher or being a surgeon. I've heard women call motherhood the 'highest' calling on a woman's life. I disagree. The highest call on women is their service to the Lord. But He calls some women to the high calling of motherhood and requires of us high standards." Sarah's wisdom and candidness are refreshing and encouraging. This is a quick, focused, thought-provoking read and a breath of fresh air for the mother whose desire is to honor the Lord first and foremost in her life with her children and family. I strongly recommend this book for Moms who desire to draw nearer to the Savior in their child-raising and who crave a devoted, committed pathway in mothering.

Description of Sarah's book, from Amazon:

What is wholehearted motherhood? Basically (without giving the it all away), wholehearted motherhood is embracing the life of service, femininity, and joy that God requires a mother. It means accepting, submitting, and taking on the life of Christ - through His strength and power. And it means a life that looks very different from our world today.

God laid this vision on Sarah's many years ago as a young teenager from a broken home and the product of third-wave feminism. In writing this book, Sarah had to touch on parts of her life that really hurt - from the sin of others and the sin she lived.

But God.

Not only is this book about godly motherhood, it is also part of God's redemption story in Sarah's life. These words wouldn't exist if the pages of her life hadn't been written. And she is so thankful.

Cozy Winter Giveaway

Dear friends, it's been so cold here lately. I just thought that it would be nice to have a giveaway here on the blog--giveaways always warm my heart, even though my fingers are freezing . . . :-)

I pray that this giveaway would bring joy to someone and that it would be fun for everyone who enters--

My desire is for this blog to encourage each one of us to embrace the Lord's perfect will in every sphere of our lives; I pray that the items included in this giveaway would be an encouragement toward that end! --

What the giveaway includes:

  • A beautiful print from my dear blogging friend Sarah, who blogs over at The Wholehearted Home. This print is a framed Elisabeth Elliot quote that reads: "It is impossible to love deeply without sacrifice."
  • My sister Alicia Ruggieri's 3-in-1 A Time of Grace Trilogy. This softcover includes all three of her novels in one volume. Her words will surely touch your heart deeply and bring you near to the cross of Christ in a real and profound way.
  • A french vanilla scented candle
  • French vanilla coffee mix (for those who are tea drinkers, I apologize--I just can't break myself from encouraging the coffee habit . . . ;-))
  • A delicious chocolate bar--necessary winter sustenance for warming the body and heart ;-). I confess; I chose a caramel one because I love caramel . . . I promise it will be intact when it arrives ;-).
And there you have it. :-) Blessings through our precious Lord as we embrace His perfect will in this winter season . . .

Much love in our Savior,
Rebekah
