Every Living Thing: A New Devotional

I'm excited to share a project with you that has finally come to completion. Every Living Thing: Devotional Readings Drawing Our Hearts Near to God Through His Creation is a compilation of devotional entries intended to encourage us in our relationship with our Heavenly Father and to open our eyes to His handiwork and movement in creation all around us.

This devotional was a joy and quite a journey to write. The Lord placed its completion upon my heart and I've been working on it in the bits and pieces of my time, especially in the early morning hours when my children are still asleep (I always find that this is the best time for me to write without interruption :-) ).

Every Living Thing is a 31-day devotional and may be purchased on Amazon or directly through me. It is available in paperback or as a Kindle Ebook. The link for Amazon is below. Please reply in the comment section if you would like me to send it to you directly.

Having a Daily Quiet Time with Kids

You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, like the days of the heavens above the earth.

Deuteronomy 11:19-21 NKJV

Something that the Lord has pressed upon my heart since my children were babies is the importance of having a daily "Quiet Time" with them. This is a focused time in which we read the Bible, pray, sing a hymn and memorize Scripture. All of my life, I watched my Mom have a daily Quiet Time with the Lord; hers was always early in the morning. This made a great impression upon me. She stressed through her words and actions the significance of having a daily time with the Lord and I witnessed how that focused time of prayer and reading the Scripture deeply impacted her life.

As a little girl, my Mom encouraged me and my sisters to daily read the Bible and pray as well as keep a prayer journal. Actually, she set aside a certain amount of time that we were expected to do this when we were elementary-school-age. I balked at the notion at first, and then later grew to crave that time with the Lord and to choose to do it of my own free will without any prodding. This habit has stayed with me into my teenage years and now into my adult life. Children learn by example. Children want direction. Children need to be guided; they will not naturally "evolve" into a Bible-loving Christian--they need to be led. This is why we are figuratively "shepherds" of our children. Watching my Mom's example and being required as a child to have a daily Quiet Time with the Lord, helped me to be disciplined as an adult to keep this sacred time with the Lord consistently. I watched a Mom who was full of joy in the Lord's presence and I wanted the joy that I saw in her. This yielded the peaceable fruit of righteousness in my life as the Lord worked in that desire to bring grace through His Word, through prayer and through the memorization of Scripture.

We need to lead our children in this area; I cannot stress it enough (Deuteronomy 11:19-21). It is of vital importance. Children are only little once. We have one opportunity with them; we have a responsibility before the Lord. Lay tiredness, lack of motivation, lack of desire, or even the perceived lack of time aside and do this. You will be glad that you did and not have any regrets.

When my two children were little babies (they are age 3 1/2 and 5 now), I held them on the floor in the morning and read from the Bible to them. I sang a hymn to them and prayed. We did this consistently every morning at around the same time each day. A few years ago, I noticed that my daughter knew phrases from many, many hymns. This was a gift to me from the Lord to encourage me to continue to have this daily time with my children. We have continued the same practice over the past few years, with my children participating more and more in our daily Quiet Time. Sometimes we read from a children's Bible, sometimes I include a devotional and then we sing a hymn and pray together. We work on memorizing Scripture verses. At night, after dinner, I've begun to read from the regular Bible and to sing a hymn after we've eaten. I have tried to be very consistent with this by the grace of God and my children have come to expect it and to love the Bible stories.

Something that I think is so very important as a parent is to gently enforce schedules, rules,  and expectations--it is something that I am learning and growing in as a parent and that the Lord is teaching me in my life with my children. If I do not guide and lead my child, who will? And of course this needs to be done in a loving, Christ-like way--never in an authoritative "You WILL read your Bible" attitude. Because that will drive your children away from the Lord and cause them to resent the Bible. They need to watch from example. It is important that they see you reading your Bible, not only studying it, but reading it because you love to read His Word. It is important that they see you on your knees, humbling yourself before the Lord. It is important for them to see you bring your worries and problems and needs before the throne of grace. Lead by example; lead from a sincere desire for them to become godly adults who love His Word--not just because you want "good kids"; if you don't feel this way, pray that the Lord would give you that desire in this area. I promise you; it will have a profound impact upon your children.

As children grow older you may encourage them to have their own Quiet Time. Set a timer (I love timers--and so do kids, even if they think they don't! ;-)) Give them a special prayer journal. Make sure that they have their own Bible that they can carefully outline and keep on their desk or by their bedside. Be consistent. Keep a schedule and follow it diligently, as well as you are able by the grace of God. Don't allow the cares and distractions of this life to keep you and your children from this practice. Years from now, you will be so glad that you encouraged and practiced a daily Quiet Time with the Lord.

And if you don't have a daily Quiet Time or are not consistent, begin now! The Lord will reward you; the Lord will bless your obedience. It is never to late to begin--the Lord is able to redeem all things. Make Him first and He will honor you and bless your family and use you as a blessing to others (I Samuel 2:30).

Below are some resources that have encouraged me and my children in our daily walk with the Lord and with having a daily Quiet Time. I would also encourage you to purchase or acquire a good hymnal--many times churches will be happy to give your family one if you ask. I have found hymnals and devotionals in local thrift stores as well for an extremely low cost. Seek and you will find! :-)

The following are a few devotionals from authors that have blessed our family and that I would recommend highly:

God's Good News:  A Bible Storybook, by Billy Graham

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes, by Kenneth N. Taylor

Big Thoughts for Little People, by Kenneth N. Taylor

My First Bible in Pictures, by Kenneth N. Taylor

Every Day with Jesus: 365 Devotions for Kids, by Charles F. Stanley

Note: I especially love the older Kenneth N. Taylor devotionals for kids that are sometimes available at thrift stores, the Goodwill, etc. If you find any of these, they are treasures, as the older versions are so good and out of print, I believe! They usually include hidden ladybugs on each page that the children can search for.

Devotional Recommendations for 2017

The Lord has used the following devotionals to greatly bless me. I pray that they may be a blessing to you or to someone you know who is seeking a deeper walk with Christ!

If someone were to ask me what devotional has had the greatest impact upon my life, I would immediately answer My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers. This book spoke to me profoundly in my early years of following the Lord and beginning to learn the sweetness of surrender and obedience. The Lord was peeling away the crusty outer layers of my heart and pouring His truth into my soul. The fullness and richness of Chambers' devotional was daily nourishment to me. My early years as a Christian were years of sweetness and of sensing the Lord's presence and experiencing His nearness in a way that is indescribable. It was the spring of my life with the Lord, and I treasure those years and this devotional which the Lord used so powerfully to grow my heart in obedience and love for Him.

My mother's copy of Chamber's devotional that she gave to me.

As I began to grow in my faith, the Lord led me to another devotional which is equally precious to me, Charles Haddon Spurgeon's Morning and Evening. There is so much to glean from Spurgeon, and I have used this book for years and continue to return to it. Spurgeon's wisdom and insights as well as his deep and intimate relationship to the Lord spoke to me--this devotional has been like water to my thirsty soul over and over again.

A third devotional that the Lord has used in my life is Streams in the Desert. This book, compiled by Mrs. Charles Cowman, was recommended to me by several people, and I finally ordered a copy. I have been enjoying this one immensely. The "old-time" writers' words have been ministering to my heart, and I have been enjoying selections from Pastors and authors like George Matheson (who wrote the hymn "O Love that Wilt Not Let me Go"), Frederick Faber, and others.  If you are seeking a deeper, more intimate walk with the Lord, this is a wonderful devotional to slowly read through.

Two other devotionals that the Lord has used to encourage me in my walk with Him have been Charles Stanley's Every Day in His Presence and Elisabeth Elliot's Keep A Quiet Heart. While Keep A Quiet Heart is not a yearly devotional, it is one that could be used devotionally for a shorter period of time and is so rich in wisdom.

I pray that these recommendations would be helpful! The Lord bless you as you seek His face daily . . . Please feel free to share with me in the comments what devotionals have been an encouragement in your life!

Monthly Book Giveaway: Mornings With Tozer

For more information about Monthly Book Giveaways, click HERE.

This month's book giveaway is a wonderful and encouraging daily devotional, Mornings With Tozer.

I have to admit that A.W. Tozer's writings are relatively new to me. I discovered Tozer through another man greatly used of God--Vance Havner (and if you can find any of Havner's sermons or books, I strongly would recommend them!)

Vance Havner spoke of A.W. Tozer as a "prophet," in the sense that Tozer had a prophetical, Scriptural word for the modern day church, a church that he saw as slowly leaving it's first Love.

You will be changed through reading Tozer. His words are challenging and convicting; they may even make you shift uncomfortably in your seat. Tozer wasn't one to beat around the bush. He speaks candidly, he speaks truthfully, He speaks with grace; He speaks of what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called "costly grace."

The Lord has used Tozer in my life to open my eyes towards the complacency of the modern Christian Church, a complacency that we often embrace without even realizing it. His words will challenge you; they will encourage you; they will spur you on towards a deeper walk with our Lord Jesus.  And after you've read Mornings with Tozer, pick up some of his other works  . . . I  know that they will bless you.

Description from the Publisher:

"Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life." -Psalm 143:8 (NIV)
Grab your coffee, find your favorite chair, and begin your day with guidance from A. W. Tozer.
Many of these 365 devotional readings come from sermons Tozer preached close to his death in 1963, marking them with a deep concern for spiritual intimacy and true worship. He urges you to pursue God, confess sin, pray fervently, and seek the Spirit. Let this book be a garnish in your feast of God's Word.
As you welcome the morning light and all the sights and sounds of the new day, let Mornings with Tozer awaken your heart.
Author Biography (from the publisher):

A.W. TOZER began his lifelong pursuit of God at the age of seventeen after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. A self-taught theologian, Tozer was a pastor, writer and editor whose powerful use of words continues to grip the intellect and stir the soul of today's reader. Among his best-loved books are the classics The Pursuit of God and The Attributes of God.

Monthly Book Giveaway-- Abandoned to God: The Biography of Oswald Chambers

For more information about Monthly Book Giveaways click HERE.

I am beyond excited to announce this month's book giveaway. Oswald Chambers is a man whose writing and experience have helped to shape so many in their Christian walk and to encourage surrender to the Lord in every area of life. Chamber's devotional, My Utmost for His Highest, has been widely read and has touched the hearts and challenged the souls of countless believers.

I "met" Oswald Chambers when I was about 16 years old. That was the time when the Lord more deeply awakened my heart to spiritual things -- to wanting a very close relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, even though I had asked Him into my heart as a young child.

I wanted to know the meaning of surrender -- what it meant to surrender everything to the Lord, to live a life consecrated to Him.

So I asked my mom, who herself possessed a deep relationship with Jesus Christ, how to have a more intimate connection with the Savior.

She gave me a book -- a worn, dog-eared book -- her own copy of My Utmost for his Highest-Chamber's devotional. I treasure it still. I cannot begin to describe the impact that this book has had upon my life. I am forever indebted to my mom for that precious gift and counsel to read Chamber's words. And I am forever grateful to the Lord for leading me to Himself through this man's writings.

I later read Chamber's biography, written by David McCasland. This is a tremendous book, providing the reader with a rich look into the life of a man given completely into the hands of His almighty Father. I know that it will be a blessing to any who read it. I could not help it -- I am also giving away a pocket copy of Chamber's devotional, (compiled by his wife, Biddy) My Utmost for His Highest, as a companion to Chamber's biography. The Lord has used this book so mightily in my own life, and it is a rich treasure of insight and encouragement towards a deeper walk with the Lord Jesus.

The following is taken from the back of Chamber's biography, Abandoned to God:

"Oswald Chambers was a man for all time. His mind was the mind of Christ and so his words are compelling because they  reflect the thoughts of our Savior. I am not the first to say that no book outside the Bible has influenced me as much as My Utmost for His Highest. In David McCasland's book we have, at last, the story of this remarkable man's life and how, having honored God, God is now honoring him with the only fame that really matters." Cal Thomas, syndicated columnist

"Whoever has read or heard about My Utmost for His Highest must buy and read this book from cover to cover. Your tears will flow, your heart will be moved, the Holy Spirit will speak a word of peace, and your Christian life will never be the same." Harold Lindsell, Editor Emeritus, Christianity Today

"So many millions of us have read his words, been deepened by his prayers, been brought before God by his writing. And now we get to know him. I had no idea what a magnificent life was present behind these marvelous words. Oswald Chambers' writing is validated in detail after detail by his life." Eugene H. Peterson, James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology, Regent College

"If you are one of those who know and love Oswald Chambers' famous book of devotional readings, My Utmost for His Highest--edited and published by his faithful widow, "Biddy" in the late 1920s--you will want to become intimately acquainted with this giant among Christian devotional writers. This new biography offers you that opportunity." D. James Kennedy, Senior Minister,  Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

"Oswald Chambers: Abandoned to God is a magnificent description of how one man sought God and lived out that relationship in the realities of life. It will stimulate you heart to follow God more fully. For years I have used Oswald Chambers' My Utmost for His Highest. In this biography I see where that depth of input was born and developed." Jerry E. White, General Director, The Navigators

"My Utmost for His Highest has become an essential part of the process of maturity for countless Christians over many decades, but we have know little about this man of God whose life has meant so much to so many. I welcome David McCasland's contribution, which goes a long way toward showing everyone how contemporary Chambers' writing really are." James Engel, Distinguished Professor of Marketing, Research, and Strategy, Eastern College
