He Remembers

Children of the heav’nly Father
Safely in His bosom gather;
Nestling bird nor star in Heaven
Such a refuge e’er was given.

--Karolina Sandell-Berg

It was her bedtime.

My little daughter and I climbed the stairs and headed into my room to retrieve the CD player and the hymnal.

Just as we had turned to go into her room next door, we heard my husband pull up, coming home from work.

"Do you want to say hi to Daddy?" I asked, moving towards the open, screened window high over the driveway where he was getting out of our van.

Excitedly, my daughter joined me near the window and we called down to him.

Immediately, my daughter asked, "Daddy, will you help me with the hard puzzle?" and then closely followed that with, "And will you go down the big slide with me?"

So funny . . . those were the two things that I had told my daughter that her daddy would help her with the next day--his day off.

She is only two and a half, but these things were on her mind and stuck with her through the day, and she remembered them when she saw her daddy.

Soon after, the thought came to me, "If a two-year-old can remember a promise given to her, how much more does the Lord remember His promises?"

And how much more does He delight to remember His children when they pray to him in faith, waiting for Him, trusting in him?

I need to remember this.

Because if an earthly father can inspire such love and trust and devotion and faith, how much more should I trust my Heavenly Father will hear my prayers and answer them in His faithfulness?

He will not ignore His child. He hears the prayers of His people.

He knows. He loves. He will come . . . as a Father to His precious child.

I have been praying about a situation and the Lord has been silent until now.

But this incident with my daughter once again reminded me of the Father's love and care.

And I will trust in His perfect faithfulness . . .

Until He comes.

  2. Bekki, what a beautiful illustration of the Father's love for us.

You words "Because if an earthly father can inspire such love and trust and devotion and faith, how much more should I trust my Heavenly Father will hear my prayers and answer them in His faithfulness?" reminded me that there are times I fall short in this area. I have no excuse. My Father in Heaven has ALWAYS been gracious to me. I have countless testimonies of His love for me.

Thank you for sharing the gentle reminder inspired by your daughter's story of the Heavenly Father's perfect love for us.

  3. Lord remembers His promises, Amen! I wish I would remember them as well as He does, or your little girl does. Sometimes it's so easy to be down and think that there is nothing to do. If only I would remember what God has promised to us - that He will lift us up!

    1. Joanna, I understand what you mean--it is so easy for me to become caught up in the cares of this life, and worry and fear and anxiety that I lose sight of Him. May He give us the grace to gaze upon Him and know that He is with us to help and to strengthen and to remember His promises. God bless you!

  5. Cares and fears certainly do threaten to crowd Him out, but what rest there is in His perfect love. Just as our little ones trust in our love, and for us to put their fears to rest, so can we trust the Lord. Even more so! Little children like your daughter can carry such sweet reminders for us. A joyful week to you, Rebekah!

  8. What a wonderful encouragement! He is always faithful and thankfully, He never leaves us, even when we may wander a bit. I hope you all had fun the next day :) This reminds of the verse (and I had to go look it up) in Luke 11:13 "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" He loves us more than we can even know!! Thank you for the beautiful, sweet reminder!

  9. I need to Remembe this too! He does not forget, He never sleeps, He is always working out His will and it is good for me. Even in the hard moments, days, years, God remembers, not just on occasion but intimately at all times. Isaiah 40:27-28

  11. So precious...your story of your daughter is as precious as Carol's story of her daughter's child like faith. It's so cool how the Lord wants us to understand that He is our good Father and He wants us to trust Him, surrender all and believe He has everything taken care of...no worries!

  18. I'm your neighbor over at Missional Women. This was a beautiful post. I love the image of your daughter trusting her daddy (the picture with the two of them was precious, too). And the lesson you drew about God is a timely one for me. I know that He cares, and so I must continue to rest in HIs love.

Just like those adorable birdies! Yes, Lord, bring me the spiritual nourishment that I need so much.

    GOD BLESS!

  20. This just gave me chills. I have been learning so much about how God delights in us. And this also makes me realize - our children have the capacity to memorize much more quickly than we do as adults. It's so important that we teach our children God's Word so they can hide it in their hearts, always remembering God's promises to us.

    1. Jen, yes; that is so true . . . I know that the Lord has been impressing that on my heart, too (to teach my children His truths as we go throughout the day)--to set the Lord always before me so that my children see Him through me . . . it's so important, and many times I fail, but I know that the Lord will bless me and help me as I desire this and seek to do it by His strength. Thank you for your words; they were such an encouragement. God bless you!
