Monthly Book Giveaway~~The Pilgrim's Progress

Oh, I am so happy to continue these Monthly Book Giveaways! I had taken a break from them for awhile during a season of transition in my life but I am so excited to return to them now! I pray that they will bless you as they have blessed me. The only thing better than reading a good book is being able to share that book with another precious soul. :-)

And so, without further ado, this month's giveaway is for a copy of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress. This tremendous book has been used by the Lord in the hearts and lives of so many countless believers. Indeed, it is amazing how the Lord works His greatest beauty through times of trial and adversity. Bunyan wrote this book in prison, suffering for the Lord's sake, and its beautiful message still resonates with believers today on a worldwide level.

Brief description of The Pilgrim's Progress (from CBD):

Once the most deeply cherished book in English-speaking households other than Bible itself, John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress is the allegorical tale of Christian the pilgrim on his journey to the Celestial City. Along the way, Christian encounters both worthy companions and dreadful adversaries. Although this book was written more than three hundred years ago, this stirring spiritual narrative still bears the power to challenge and encourage readers on their own spiritual journeys.

Please enter the giveaway below and share about it with a friend!

Monthly Book Giveaway~ The Heavenly Man~The Remarkable, True Story of Chinese Christian Brother Yun

“There was once a fiddler who played so beautifully that everybody danced. A deaf man who could not hear the music considered them all insane. Those who are with Jesus in suffering hear this music to which other men are deaf. They dance and do not care if they are considered insane.”
― Richard Wurmbrand

“It is not great men who change the world, but weak men in the hands of a great God.”
― Brother Yun

One cannot adequately describe the sufferings that the underground Chinese church has endured for the sake of Jesus Christ, nor completely fathom the spiritual life that has sprung from that suffering. Only when we embrace the promises of God through the sharp talons of suffering for His sake, can we know the comfort and joy that follows.

The Heavenly Man is a testimony of that kind of suffering and of that kind of joy--the joy that sees Jesus Christ and endures hardship and deprivation for the sake of the Gospel. The joy that embraces beauty from ashes and the oil of joy from mourning. The joy that looks beyond what is seen to the unseen. Brother Yun's testimony should be read by every Christian who desires to experience a closer, more intimate walk with the Lord Jesus Christ--because this kind of intimacy is only gained through being identified with our Lord through suffering for His sake.

For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake . . .
Philippians 1:29 NKJV

Brief description of The Heavenly Man from CBD (Christian Book Distributors):
You've seen the headlines---government crackdowns on Chinese house churches; mass arrests and human rights violations. . . . Learn how God took a young half-starved boy from Henan Province and enabled him to stand strong on the front lines for Jesus, braving horrific opposition and impossible odds. Life-changing!

To enter the giveaway for a paperback copy of this book, written by Paul Hattaway, please comment below on why you would like to read this book or about one of your favorite examples of a follower of Christ who has endured persecution. A winner will be randomly drawn from the entrants' names one week from today and announced on the blog.

This month's book giveaway is for a delightful read-aloud or alone illustrated picture book, Mr. Portly Finds His Purpose. Please read to the end of the post to enter the giveaway! :-)

This creative, wonderful book is written by my sister, Alicia Ruggieri, and illustrated by her husband, Alex. They are a couple devoted to the Lord, and their teamwork in this endeavor has produced this sweet, endearing story of a pug who discovers his purpose and worth. It is a great read-aloud story for families--or for an individual child or adult.

Description from the back of the book:

When Miss Cat-Next-Door informs Mr. Portly the Pug that he is Useless, Mr. Portly is heartbroken. He decides to find out for himself whether or not the Cat is telling the truth...and discovers that everyone - even the most seemingly-useless among us - has worth. A sweet and encouraging read-aloud story for children, the childlike, and all pug-lovers!

Alicia writes: This book is available in paperback only, and it is currently available exclusively through Amazon. My hope is that sharing and reading it with your children or grandchildren will bless you with sarcasm-free, humorous enjoyment that also encourages each of us to be thankful for the worth God with which our Creator has endowed us. :-)

Author Biography:

The Ruggieris and their emotionally-troubled second-hand pug live on the New England coast. They dream of having their very own "grumble" of pugs someday.

Monthly Book Giveaway: Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret

“But Hudson Taylor, young though he was, had learned to know God in a very real way. He had seen Him, as he wrote, quell the raging of a storm at sea, in answer to definite prayer, alter the direction of the wind, and give rain in a time of drought. He had seen Him, in answer to prayer, stay the hand of would-be murderers and quell the violence of enraged men. He had seen Him rebuke sickness in answer to prayer, and raise up the dying, when all hope of recovery seemed gone. For more than eight years he had proved His faithfulness in supplying the needs of his family and work in answer to prayer, unforeseen as many of those needs had been. How could he but encourage others to put their trust in the love that can not forget, the faithfulness that can not fail?”

For more information about Monthly Book Giveaways, click HERE

This beautiful biography of Hudson Taylor's life, written by his son and daughter-in-law, is one that every Christian would benefit from reading. It tells the story of Hudson Taylor's conversion--a remarkable story in and of itself, and a testimony to a mother's prayers. It tells the story of a surrendered life, a life of power and strength and submission and obedience. It tells the story of a man who trusted in the Lord alone for his supplies, the story of a man who was willing to give up human comforts and pleasures for the joy that was set before him. It tells the story of a man who wept over lost souls and whose life's work was to win them. It tells the story of the birth of the China Inland Mission, a society that was used greatly by the Lord for years even after Taylor's death. It tells the story of a life offered to Christ. It tells the story of Christ's love and grace and sufficiency when one man or woman chooses to bank everything on the promises of God and finds that all the Promises in Him are YES.

Description of the book (from CBD):

Compelled to share the gospel with the unreached people of China, Hudson Taylor devoted his life to this purpose. He modeled a life of utter dependence on Christ for both his spiritual and material needs. That was his secret and the reason for his lasting impact on the people of China and missions. This biography by his son and daughter in law has become a Christian classic.

To enter the giveaway, please comment below about why you would like to read this book OR about any Christian missionary who the Lord has used in your life to compel you to walk more closely with our Savior. The giveaway will run for ONE WEEK (February 25th-March 2nd)and then I will randomly select a name from a hat from those who commented below. So be sure to check back! I will announce the winner next Thursday (March 3rd) here and on Facebook and give that person three days to respond before randomly selecting another winner.

Monthly Book Giveaway--Keep A Quiet Heart, by Elisabeth Elliot

For more information about Monthly Book Giveaways, click HERE.

I opened a book tonight on my bookshelf and looked at the haphazardly-stamped message inside its back cover: "This book no longer the property of ______________Library.

It was a copy of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. The book was in good condition; I was glad to have it in my possession, but mourned the knowledge that the library possibly never replaced Bunyan's powerful spiritual allegory.

Another incident came to my mind today. Some time ago, I was looking for a book written by Elisabeth Elliot. Entering a well-stocked, popular Christian bookstore, I approached an employee after having no success in locating the book.

I asked her if they carried the particular book that I had in mind, and she somewhat-too-glibly answered that, "No; we don't really carry Elisabeth Elliot anymore..."

The old preacher Vance Havner used to warn of forgetting the ancient paths. Many of the older Christian authors have so much to offer to the church as a whole today, truths that must not be forgotten but rather pressed upon the heart like leaves between the pages of a book. It is my hope (in part) in continuing these Monthly Book Giveaways that some of the older authors and the deep truths that their words conveyed may be remembered. There are some wonderful modern authors, but I pray that we may never lose the influence of those who have gone before us and have been found faithful.

So this month's book giveaway is for a copy of Elisabeth Elliot's beautiful devotional-like book Keep a Quiet Heart. I have been tremendously blessed by this book and so deeply appreciate Elisabeth Elliot's insights and spirit-filled wisdom and perspective. I pray that it may be a blessing to someone this month.

Description of the book (from CBD):

When you long for a quiet refuge away from the noisy, frenetic circumstances of day-to-day commitments--where do you turn? If you're Elisabeth Elliot, acclaimed speaker and author of many best-selling books, you look to one place alone: to the embracing arms of our omnipotent and infinitely loving Heavenly Father. This book is a unique collection culled from the lead articles featured in Mrs. Elliot's newsletter over the past several years. "Mostly they are about learning to know God," the author says. "Nothing else comes close to being as important as that. It's what we are here for." Join Elisabeth as she points the way to a deeper, more fulfilling--and restful--walk with God.

Author Biography (from CBD):

Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) was one of the most perceptive and popular Christian writers of the last century. The author of more than twenty books, including Passion and PurityThe Journals of Jim Elliot, and These Strange Ashes, Elliot offered guidance and encouragement to millions of readers worldwide.

Monthly Book Giveaway--Walking From East to West: God in the Shadows

For more information about Monthly Book Giveaways, click HERE.

“Sometimes in the shadows of one’s self lie the problems, and in the shadows of one’s shaping lie the answers.”
― Ravi ZachariasWalking from East to West: God in the Shadows

This month's giveaway is for a copy of Ravi Zacharias' Walking From East to West: God in the Shadows.

I cannot speak more highly of Zacharias' books. The Lord's work is so evident through his words and through his humble Spirit-filled ministry that when I listen to him or read his words, I have to admit, I stand in quiet awe of the Holy Spirit working in and through this man.

I read this particular book several years ago. It gives the reader an eye-opening glimpse into Zacharias' early life and conversion, and the Lord's subsequent use of Zacharias as a willing vessel for the spread of the Gospel. I am excited to offer this book and pray that the Lord would use it greatly in someone's life.

Description of the Book from the Publisher:

For more than three decades, apologist Ravi Zacharias has shared bits and pieces of his personal life and experience. In Walking from East to West, now in softcover, Zacharias invites you to follow him on a journey through his life: to see and smell the neighborhood in India where he grew up, to feel a mother’s love and the consternation of a harsh father … and the lure of a rebellious soul. In a crisis experience, Zacharias exchanged pantheism for monotheism, and meaninglessness for true fulfillment in Christ. He has traveled from the East to the West, and then back again to answer skeptics’ penetrating questions about the meaning of life and the existence of a God who is there for his children. Zacharias invites you to follow him on this journey through his life and into the lives of others, and to see how he has become more convinced with each year that Jesus Christ is the one who came to give you life to the fullest.

Author Biography (from CBD)

Ravi Zacharias is President and Founder of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM).  Their global outreach grew from humble roots in 1984 and includes fielding a team of itinerant speakers who operate from offices located around the world including the U.S., the UK, Romania, the Middle East, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada.  The Hallmark of Ravi’s heart is his strong evangelistic and apologetic that manifests itself from a position of compassion.
R.S.B. Sawyer is a writer whose work has appeared in HarperOne’s Best Christian Writing Series.  He and his wife, Joy Roulier Sawyer, live in Denver, where they are active in the Lighthouse Writers Workshop community.  Their editing work together has earned awards from the Associated Church Press and the Catholic Press Association.

Monthly Book Giveaway--The Hidden Art of Homemaking, by Edith Schaeffer

For more information about Monthly Book Giveaways, click HERE

This month's book giveaway is for a wonderful, practical, delightful book that has challenged me and opened my mind and heart to see homemaking in a beautiful and intriguing light--as an art and a creative channel through which to use the gifts and abilities that the Great Creator has given us for His glory, and to enrich the lives of our family, friends, and other believers.

There is a dutiful element to homemaking; that cannot be denied. Washing dishes, folding towels, cleaning floors, changing sheets, weeding gardens. And the Lord teaches us faithfulness and perseverance through the monotony of everyday tasks. He gives us joy through them and fills us with the joy of Himself through serving others via "menial" tasks. This is one of the ways that I believe that the Lord teaches us servanthood and surrender.

But, as Edith Schaeffer points out in this wonderful book -- Homemaking may also be seen as an art and possesses an artistic, creative element that should be explored and embraced. Arranging flowers on an otherwise bare table, sewing beautiful curtains, preparing an eye-pleasing and nourishing meal, dressing attractively . . . these are just some of the ways that we reflect the creativity of the Great Creator in our lives and homes.

If you are not the the winner of this giveaway, I would strongly encourage you to obtain a copy of this book and read it anyway! It will open your mind and your heart to the joy of reflecting the beauty of the Creator through creative homemaking and will truly enrich your life and the lives of those around you; it is a mind- and eye-opening book.

Description of The Hidden Art of Homemaking:  (from CBD)

Artists and homemakers, prepare to be inspired. Schaeffer transfers domestic tasks into masterpieces of creative expression-whether she's filling the house with flowers, music, and literature, building a toy rocking horse from scratch, dipping homemade candles, and more in this timeless classic.

If you are not familiar with Edith Schaeffer, she and her husband were led of the Lord to begin a place of refuge, called L'Abri, for those who were seeking answers to life's questions--you can read more about the Schaeffer's and their work HERE

And now, time for the Giveaway! :-)
